The creative process of the Owiny Sigoma Band in the past has been crucially entwined by localities, memories and stories, as well as an element of spontaneity from their jam sessions. ‘I Made You / You Made Me’ sung by Jesse is a track inspired by the birth of his daughter. Stirred by hearing “purely happy” African popular music on the radio and taking early morning walks with gospel emanating from the churches Jesse challenged himself to write a joyous pop song. This track, dubbed by The Guardian as ‘gloriously upbeat’, beautifully reflects the ambience and energy of the environments in which it was made, as well as Owiny Sigoma Band’s raw and organic collaborative process.

Mysterious psychedelic French producer High Wolf brings a unique take to the track. High Wolf is a friend of Jesse Hackett from both having released on Leaving Records, an imprint of Stones Throw, focusing mostly on cassette releases from the likes of Laraaji, Mndsgn and Ras G. The remix bears the hallmarks of High Wolf’s trippy production aesthetics. Working seamlessly with looped samples from the original track on a beat machine, he conjures up a glitchy and catchy rework, and weaves in multiple other instrumental themes like a folk guitar riff, almost retaining some of Jesse’s intended joyous pop feel.

Fans of “Harpoon Land” from Owiny’s previous album Power Punch will love this…
